Formerly called hydropathy, Hydrotherapy is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment. It involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating specific injuries or conditions.
Aushealth Physiotherapy operates out of 2 Hydrotherapy Pools on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Physiotherapists Jan Williams and Sarah Arkins head up Aushealth Physiotherapy’s Hydrotherapy Department. Local Peninsula doctors including shoulder surgeons Dr. Graeme Macdougal and Dr. Matthew Sherlock together with knee surgeon Dr. David Dickison use our Hydrotherapy Department to facilitate the initial healing stages and restoration of movement for many of their patients after surgery.
“In addition to post operative rehabilitation, water exercise is an excellent way for those with arthritis, acute back, shoulder, knee or hip pain to build up strength, ease stiff joints and relax sore muscles. Water’s buoyancy greatly reduces the pressure on your joints, making it easier to perform the needed range of motion and strengthening exercises.”
- Jan Williams, Physiotherapist
When the individual reaches particular milestones in their rehabilitation, our physiotherapists then refer the patient to our Gym clinic for end-stage strengthening. The combination of hydrotherapy and land-based exercises has successfully treated hundreds of individuals suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.
Jan continues to mentor Sydney University physiotherapy students who are interested in pursuing hydrotherapy as a specialty area.
